ISLAMABAD - During January 2013, the overall crime rate has increased in the federal capital as compared to corresponding period of the last year, Pakistan Today has learnt. According to data collected from various police stations, as many as 663 cases were reported in January against the 643 cases registered in January 2012. In 2013, cases of attempt to murder, burglary, car snatching and motorcycle theft cases witnessed a significant increase than the same period of the last year. However, the ratio of some crimes witnessed a slight decrease. In January, seven murder, 13 attempt to murder, 21 injury, 115 offence against property, 14 recovery under Section 411 of PPC and 10 cases under Zina Ordinance were registered. According to data, police registered 86 cases under the Prohibition Ordinance, nine fatal accidents and 31 fraud cases were also registered. Interestingly, despite the presence of several gambling dens in the city, particularly in sector G/9, not a single FIR was registered against any gamblers in January. However, police registered 42 cases of robbery, (burglary: daytime 4, night 16, dacoity 1, and 21 cases of robbery were registered). During January, police registered 20 cases of car theft and 10 cases of bike theft. According to police record, 39 cases of theft (general theft category) were registered. Per record, (from January 1 to 30) of total 7 murder cases police could only complete investigation of two cases. Five cases are pending with police. Whereas, all 20 cases of car theft are pending, showing inefficiency of Islamabad police. Whereas, police performance against motorcycle lifters is also pathetic as police teams could only submit one challan of 10 cases. During the last year, as many 460 car theft cases were registered in various police stations. Of total 460 cases, investigation of 158 cases is still pending. While of total 24 cases of car snatching that took place in 2012, police is yet to complete investigation of 12 cases. In 2012, an 18 percent surge was witnessed in robberies. According to police record, a total of 538 cases of robbery took place in Islamabad in 2012 as compared to 477 cases in 2011. In January 2013, there is no let-up in overall crime, which is alarming for the citizens. Pakistan Today
